An orchestra is a group of musicians who play together on various instruments including strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Young performers gain invaluable experience and benefits through participation in ensemble performance. Each section of the orchestra has a special role. The strings are the most important section, with the first violins taking the melody most of the time and the lower strings providing an accompaniment. The woodwinds add contrasting tone colours and are often given melodic solos. Horns and trumpets bring power to loud passages and fill out the harmony. Timpani are used for rhythmic bite and emphasis. As a whole, the classical orchestra has developed into a flexible and colourful instrument to which composers entrust their most powerful and dramatic musical conceptions.
All students are encouraged to join however they must have be at an emerging level (be able to read music independently and have a basic technique) in their chosen instrument and be enrolled in a paid class to attend.
