- Music Moves Foundation Course 2021
February 27, 2021 - December 11, 2021
8:15 am - 9:05 am
Marshall Laing Music School, Foundation Music Class for 5-6 year olds
Saturday mornings 8.15am to 9.05am
WHY JOIN THIS CLASS?
In this year-long class series, children are invited into music-making through song and musical game experiences which engage them in active participation using their whole body and voice.
The body and voice are the child’s first instruments of engagement, expression and meaning-making. Movement is their first, and most familiar language.
This dynamic, sound-before-symbol; sensation-before-analysis approach to music learning fosters a deep internalisation of musical elements and music-movement relationships. It facilitates a love of music-making, and a foundational readiness for the array of social and musical skills which musicians must demonstrate, prior to developing the technical capabilities required for any specific instrument playing. A core focus of this class series will be on fostering ‘basic music competence’; the ability to sing in tune and sustain a steady beat, which underpins more complex musical skills.
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
Through active participation in songs and musical games, children will experience, explore and practise the musical elements and relationships inherent in musical language.
Gradually, over the course of the year, these elements (beat, rhythm, pitch etc) are made conscious. The symbols used in music notation are introduced in context, towards the end of the year. This approach to music learning follows the natural path of learning for all languages;
hearing—doing/improvising—- reading—-writing and composing.
Such an approach fosters the development of many skills which are fundamental for music-making and for engagement in life in general, for example; active listening skills, social and communicative skills, body awareness, coordination, imagination and creation, concentration, thinking, planning and analysis.
-Children must be between the ages of 5 and 6 years old at the start of the school year (February).
-Suitable clothing must be worn for safety and ease of movement. The class will take place in bare-feet. T-shirts and shorts or leggings are recommended. No tights please. A jumper or additional layer which can be easily removed or added as required is advised.
-Each child is encouraged to bring their own water bottle to help them stay hydrated.

Marie is a passionate advocate of active approaches to music learning which engage the body, emotions and intellect simultaneously, and which develop the person as a musician, and the musician as a person.
Marie is a qualified Dalcroze Eurhythmics Teacher (Dalcroze Eurhythmics Certificate), and has undertaken additional training in the Kodaly approach. Both approaches inform and underpin the planning of this class series.
