The flute is a member of the woodwind family. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. The flute player blows into a hole at the side of the end-piece. A musician who plays the flute can be referred to as a flute player, a flautist, a flutist, or less commonly a fluter. The flute has a very soft tone, but it is sweet and very agile. The flute is held horizontally.
To play flute a child will need to have arms long enough to reach the holes and strong enough to support the instrument out to one side. The recommended starting age is 9 years or 8 years with one year music experience or 7 years with two years musical experience. Younger students may need to use a curved head on a normal full sized flute. It is one of the easier instruments to learn as it does not require the more difficult mouthing of other woodwind (reed) instruments and the fingering is less difficult.
