The clarinet is a comparatively recent instrument dating from about 1700. It is a single reed instrument and a member of the woodwind family of instruments. A person who plays the clarinet is called a clarinetist. Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century. Mozart (1756-1791) was the first well known composer to use the clarinet. Clarinets are nearly as agile as the flute, but their tone is fuller and more powerful. They have an extra octave at the lower end of their range which has a peculiar and rich quality. The clarinet is versatile and can play melodies, accompanying arpeggios and brilliant runs.
