Enrolments for Recorder Lessons in 2019 are now open!

Tutors for 2019 are Imogen Morris, Stefenie Pickston (Saturdays) and Michael Greenwood (after school – first years only)

The recorder is a very old woodwind instrument that has been revived in recent decades. It is comparatively easy to play and, for this reason, is popular in schools. It is held vertically, with the top of the instrument in the mouth ‘end-blown.’ Fingers cover the open holes to provide the different notes.

The recorder was popular in medieval times through to the baroque era, but declined in the 18th century in favour of orchestral woodwind instruments including the flute, oboe, and clarinet. During its heyday, the recorder was traditionally associated with pastoral scenes, miraculous events, funerals, marriages and amorous scenes.

Today, it is often thought of as a child’s instrument, but there are many professional players who demonstrate the instrument’s full solo range. The sound of the recorder is remarkably clear and sweet, partly because of the lack of upper harmonics and predominance of odd harmonics in the sound.

We are unable to hire Recorders. Please speak to the school supervisor as recorders are available for purchase from the music school office.
